About

Chrystallynn S. Block also known as ‘Chrys’, is a Certified Holistic Doula, teacher, author and minister. Having been an entrepreneur for almost 15 years, she uses her experience and scholarship to push for equity and greater outcomes for Black women in maternal healthcare. As a mother, she seeks to create opportunities for women to become educated about their choices and how to advocate for their rights. Through partnering with other birth workers locally and across the country, she intends to launch various initiatives that will provide doula and midwifery services to those in underserved communities while fighting for change at the legislative level to make optimum maternal healthcare accessible for all women. She also seeks to provide mentorship for young adult mothers as they journey to and through motherhood The Nisa Project—names after her daughter who was born premature. Her mission is to not only serve as a watchmen, but be a safe-house and a healing place for those who are too often misled, unheard, unnoticed and misunderstood.

The Mission

Shema Birthing will partner with the local community to provide support and information to teens and women of childbearing age. The Nisa Project will ensure that more women have access to mental health services, adequate maternal healthcare, screening, family planning services, healthy nutritional options, clothing, housing, newborn and infant care. We will provide childbirth education as well as host community events and fundraisers to achieve the goal of ending what is known as the Black maternal healthcare crisis.
