It’s late at night, 2:28 am and technically it’s already the 4th of July. When my mother mentioned the family gathering to go swimming, i didn’t quite get her reason why. I figured she just wanted us all together. Then it hit me, it’s the 4th! My next thought was “women ain’t free”.
This post might sound biased being that I am in fact a Doula, however facts are still facts. When I became a mother, I did not have a Doula. I didn’t even know what a Doula was at the age of 22 which is when I birthed my first child. Even if I weren’t a Doula, I would still advocate for having these sacred souls in the birth space to guard, honor and support birthing people and here’s why.
Women are becoming more aware of their bodies and how amazing they truly are! When a woman becomes pregnant, the way that the body begins to change almost immediately is astonishing.
Lotus Births are such a beautiful site to see. Seeing photos of mamas cradling their meconium covered newborn just minutes after birth while the placenta lays in a bowl nearby and the umbilical cord still attached to baby is amazing.
A doula is someone who is trained to assist women in preparation and/or during childbirth by providing support emotionally and sometimes physically.
